ST Paul’s Cathedral was bang out of order branding Winston Churchill a “white supremacist”, Downing Street has blasted.
Rishi Sunak’s spokesman said he “strongly disagreed” with the venue’s description of the wartime leader.
A backlash erupted after St Paul’s made the remarks on their website while also calling Churchill – voted the greatest ever Briton – “unashamedly imperialist”.
Today No10 said: “The Prime Minister would strongly disagree with that assessment.
“When it comes to the UK’s heritage and the work and actions of former prime ministers it’s important to set it all out and ensure it’s all considered rightly and fairly in the context of the time.”
St Paul’s, where Churchill had his funeral, has since removed references to him being a white supremacist.
The offensive description was changed on Friday to read: “He is also a figure of controversy, especially when viewed from a modern perspective.”
Tory MPs have demanded the culprit who made the comparison be identified and sacked.
Historian Andrew Roberts said previously: “It’s excellent that St Paul’s have dropped their ultra-woke stance.
“The cathedral was at the centre of the world during Churchill’s funeral in 1965, and their original ill-chosen words detracted from that.
“Since pretty much everything from the past is controversial, especially when viewed from a modern perspective; their new wording is pleasingly meaningless.”
